Kate has begun a new book for adults!

To be called Bitter Greens, it interweaves the story of Charlotte-Rose de la Force, who wrote one of the first literary collections of fairytales in France during the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, with the story of Parslinette, a young girl who is imprisoned in a tower in a forest after her parent stole a handful of parsley from a mysterious and compelling woman in 16th century Venice.

'Parslinette', written by Charlotte-Rose de la Force while she was locked up in a convent near Paris by the king, was one of the earliest recounts of the story we know as Rapunzel. The first published account was written by Giambattista Basile in Italy in 1634, but it is Charlotte-Rose's story which shaped the story later told by the Grimm Brothers.

Some of the sections set in Venice will be told from the point of view of a Venetian courtesan, the red-haired muse for many of Titian's most beautiful paintings, as well as from her castrato servant. It was a time of darkness, with plague and the Venetian inquisition preying on the people of the La Serenissima, and a time of creative brilliance, with Renaissance art and early opera changing the world for ever.
